Casey A. Feldman, a senior at Fordham College at Lincoln Center, was interred at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., on July 23, 2009. Feldman was struck by a car on Friday, July 17, in Ocean City, N.J., and died of her injuries later that evening at Atlantic City Medical Center. Feldman, news editor of The Observer, the Lincoln Center student newspaper, lived in a Philadelphia suburb with her family, and was working at a summer job in Ocean City.
“Casey’s death is unspeakably sad,” said Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham University. “She was a bright, engaging and determined young woman. I cannot imagine the grief her family, friends and classmates feel today—it is a painful, shocking loss. The entire University community holds Casey in its heart and prayers, and likewise prays for her family and friends in this terrible hour.”

Contributions in Feldman’s name can be made to the Springfield High School Student Theater Workshop, 49 West Leamy Ave., Springfield, PA 19064.
Feldman was a communications major who graduated from Springfield High School in Pennsylvania. Last month she was named a finalist for the 2009 Chandler Award for Student Writer of the Year in Religion by the Religion Newswriters Association. She served as The Observer’s news editor during the 2008-2009 school year, and was planning to do so again during her senior year.
“Casey was an exceptionally talented news reporter and editor—an inquisitive, dogged and thorough perfectionist,” said Elizabeth Stone, Ph.D., professor of English and communication and media studies, and faculty adviser to The Observer. “I’d known Casey since she was a freshman and it had been very gratifying to watch her grow. Her news reporting and editing won quite a few awards for The Observer, and she herself had recently been recognized as well—as a finalist in a contest for college reporters who write about religious issues. Casey’s death is really a terrible loss to The Observer and to Fordham.”
The Office of Student Affairs is reaching out to Feldman’s classmates, and will make counseling available to any students who request it. Students, faculty and staff should contact Keith Eldredge, dean of students at Lincoln Center, with any questions about counseling services.
