Six Members Elected To Board Of Trustees

Fordham elected six new members to its board of trustees, at the board’s quarterly meeting held on Oct. 12 in Walsh Library. “Our six new trustees are all alumni of different schools of the University and will bring to the deliberations of the board an enthusiastic commitment to the Fordham of the future, as well as the high level of competence and rich experience that all have demonstrated in different, but uniformly successful professional careers,” said the Rev. Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., University president. Fordham’s newest trustees are: Stephen E. Bepler, FCO ’64, senior vice president of Capital Research and Management Co. Bepler joined Capital Research in 1972 as a security analyst and became a vice president in 1975.

Before joining Capital Research, he was vice president and principal security analyst at Clark Dodge & Company. Bepler received his MBA from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business in 1966. Gerold F.L. Klauer, FCO ’64, co-founder and vice-chairman of Gerard Klauer Mattison and Co., LLC. Klauer began his career in 1969 as a research analyst covering the paper and forest product industries with Laird, Inc. For 15 years, he was both an equity research salesman and an investment banker at Mitchell Hutchins/Paine Webber. Klauer received his MBA from Columbia Business School where he was a McKenzie Scholar. Rev. James N. Loughran, S.J., FCO ’64, GSAS ’66 and ’75, president of St. Peter’s College in New Jersey.

In addition to being a trustee at St. Peter’s, he is a member of the board at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., and the Gesu School in Philadelphia. Loughran was the dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill from 1979 to 1982 and served as the interim vice president for academic affairs/dean of the arts and sciences faculty from 1994 to 1995. From 1970 to 1973 he was an assistant dean and from 1975 to 1979 he was the undergraduate chair of the philosophy department. Loughran was a professor in the philosophy department from 1974 to 1984.

Francis J. Morison, FCO ’62, partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell, the law firm he joined upon his graduation from New York University School of Law in 1967. He became a partner in 1975 and served as the firm’s London resident partner from 1979 to 1984. Morison has concentrated in capital markets practice and from 1987 to 1999 he served on the firm’s management committee, spending his last three years on the committee as managing partner. Morison is chair of the recently-formed Board of Visitors of Fordham College at Rose Hill.

Morison received a master’s degree in English and comparative literature from Columbia. William S. Stavropoulos, PHA ’61, president and chief executive officer of The Dow Chemical Company and chairman of the executive committee and the corporate leadership team. Stavropoulos has been a member of Dow’s board of directors since 1990 and serves on the finance and environment, health, safety and public policy committees and the committee on directors. Stavropoulos joined Dow in 1967 as a research chemist, later moving on to other areas such as diagnostics product research and marketing. He became president of Dow U.S.A. in 1990 and was elected vice president of the Dow Chemical Company. In 1991, he was elected a senior vice president and also named to the board of directors of Dow Corning Corporation.

Before assuming his current position in 1995, Stavropoulos became president and chief operating officer in 1993. Stavropoulos holds a doctorate in medicinal chemistry from the University of Washington. John N. Tognino, ICO ’75, executive vice president and head of Global Sales and Member Affairs at Nasdaq, is the former president and CEO of the Security Traders Association (STA) and the STA Foundation. He has been in the securities industry for more than 40 years, spending 35 of those years with Merrill Lynch. Upon his retirement from Merrill Lynch in 1993, Tognino was a managing director for global equities. From 1988 to 1991, he lived in London and was the managing director for international equities within Merrill Lynch. He was also a member of the Nasdaq Stock Market board from 1984 to 1987 and in 1995. Tognino is the chairman of the advisory committee for Fordham’s College of Business Administration.
