The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit sat at Fordham Law School on Tuesday, September 30, 2014. The sitting marked the official opening of Fordham Law’s new building, which was dedicated on September 18 in a ceremony featuring Sonia Sotomayor, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City.

It was also the first event held in the Gorman Moot Courtroom, the flagship venue in the new building’s Moore Advocacy Center.

“We couldn’t have hoped for a more distinguished inauguration of this remarkable space,” said Dean Michael M. Martin. “Beginning with today’s event, this courtroom will serve as a locus of judicial instruction for generations of talented Fordham Law students.”

Oral arguments were heard for four cases. The three-judge panel consisted of Chief Judge Robert A. Katzmann and two Fordham Law alumni: Judge Denny Chin ’78 and Judge Loretta A. Preska ’73, Chief Judge of the Southern District of New York, who sat with the Court of Appeals by designation.

The event was followed by a question-and-answer session with the three judges in the Costantino Room. The judges answered students’ questions about judicial deference, writing effective briefs, arguing persuasively, and collaborating with fellow judges on a panel, among other topics.
