The Association of American University Presses (AAUP) in New York City has awarded Fordham’s Schools of Business a $450,000 grant to measure the state of university presses and scholarly communications. The four-year grant, funded by the Mellon Foundation, is the first of its kind in the United States in 20 years. “The bottom line is that this has been one of the greatest economic booms in years, yet many of the [university]presses are in the red, ” said Associate Professor Albert Greco, one of six Fordham business faculty members conducting this research. “University presses are facing intense competition from commercial journals and presses.” The Fordham researchers will investigate the financial, managerial, editorial and marketing operations of university presses to identify areas that need improvement. They will send questionnaires and conduct interviews at most of the association’s 122 presses, including those at Harvard, MIT and Stanford. Fordham’s Graduate School of Business Administration was established in 1969 and has been recognized nationally for the quality, innovation and comprehensiveness of its programs, which prepare graduates for global competition. The school’s part-time MBA program is ranked 14th by U.S. News & World Report.
