Fordham Inaugurates 32nd President

NEW YORK – Fordham University will inaugurate its 32nd president, Joseph M. McShane, S.J., on Friday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m. in the historic Rose Hill Gymnasium.
For Father McShane, who assumed the presidency on July 1, 2003, this marks a return to Fordham, where he served as dean of Fordham College from 1992 to 1998. Prior to his Fordham presidency, McShane served as president of the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. A native of New York City, Father McShane joined the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1967 and was ordained a priest in 1977.
Vartan Gregorian, Ph.D., president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, will give the keynote address during the installation ceremony and will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters for his academic and humanitarian leadership. Other inauguration week festivities include a student inaugural ball, the Annual Fall McGinley lecture to be delivered by Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., and the kickoff of the Sapientia et Doctrina Inaugural Lecture Series.
Fordham University’s motto, Sapientia et Doctrina (Wisdom and Learning), emphasizes rigorous scholarship and embraces a community of men and women committed to exploring the life of the mind. In this spirit, a yearlong lecture series celebrating the inauguration of the 32nd president of Fordham University, Joseph M. McShane, S.J., has been established.
