Fordham Releases Screech Owls In Central Park

Eighteen Screech Owls have been released in Central Park in the first initiative of a partnership between the University and the New York City Parks Department. The partnership, along with details about the release of the owls, will be announced by the Rev. Joseph A. O’Hare, president of Fordham University and Henry J. Stern, Parks commissioner, in the company of a screech owl, on Wed., Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. at Belvedere Castle, Central Park. Fordham University Wildlife Ecologist and Biology Professor William Giuliano and his students spent the summer surveying six city parks with the New York City Urban Park Service, a division of the Parks Department. Park Service released six owls in 1998, but did not track the birds. Giuliano’s group will monitor the new owls, along with the one left from the first release.
