Susan Gotschall

Susan Gotschall became a Fordham parent in 2008, when her son Ryan decided a Jesuit education on the east coast was right for him. “Ryan was very interested in east coast schools and Fordham gave a presentation at his high school,” says Susan. “We were all so impressed that we had to take a visit.”

The Gotschall family came from their home in Southern California to Fordham for a tour of Rose Hill, and they walked away even more excited about the University. They enjoyed the beautiful campus and meeting with Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham University, and Donna Rapaccioli, Gabelli ’83, dean of the Gabelli School of Business, and all who went out of their way to make them feel welcome.

As a Fordham parent, Susan feels that the faculty and administration have gone above and beyond to make she and her son feel welcome at the University, especially from such a long distance. “I feel Fordham has it all,” she says. “And being in New York City is truly a phenomenal advantage and experience for Ryan.”

One of the first members to join the Parents’ Leadership Council, Susan says the council allows for a more personal connection to Fordham than she might have had otherwise. As part of the council, Susan assists in many areas of service including engaging with other Fordham parents and University administrators to help promote the University’s mission and mentor students. “Being part of the council promotes a deeper way of caring and supporting the University,” she says.

Susan’s husband, Edward, unfortunately, passed away during Ryan’s freshman year. Initially overwhelmed with the loss, Susan was moved by the outpouring of care and concern the Fordham community showed her and her son. “Edward was always equally impressed with all Fordham had to offer,” Susan says. “I know he is up there so proud of our son.”

Ryan, currently in his sophomore year in the Gabelli School of Business, is studying abroad in London this semester. “I can’t wait to visit him over the Easter break,” says Susan. “I’m excited for Ryan to take advantage of this great experience.

“I believe Fordham has been an excellent choice for my son.”
