Cardinal Dulles to Examine the Role of Laity in U.S

NEW YORK � Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University, will deliver the spring McGinley lecture, �The Mission of the Laity,� on Wednesday, March 29, at 8 p.m. in the Leonard Theatre at Fordham Preparatory School on the Rose Hill campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

Cardinal Dulles will trace the history of the laity�s role in the Church, as he discusses the developing involvement of the laity since the beginning of the twentieth century and the impetus given to their mission by recent popes. While presenting the teaching of Vatican II and the three major statements of the United States Bishops on the laity, he will also clarify the confusion over the use of the terms �ministry and ministers� by explaining the use of these terms in the New Testament.

Fordham University�s McGinley Chair in Religion and Society was established in 1985 as a tribute to Laurence J. McGinley, S.J., who first attained distinction as a professor of theology and later served as president of Fordham University from 1948 to 1963. The McGinley lectures explore the relationship between religion and current social and political issues.
