Two doctoral students in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology have received academic appointments, one as a tenure-track professor and the other as a National Science Foundation (NSF) fellow.

Natalie Byfield, a sociology doctoral student in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at the Rose Hill campus, begins her term as assistant professor of sociology at St. John’s University beginning September 2007. Her area of concentration is race, ethnicity and social theory.

Andrew Tiedt, also a sociology doctoral student in the department, will attend the 2007 East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes in Tokyo, Japan, run jointly by the NSF and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Tiedt will spend two months conducting research on population aging in the developed world.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of working with graduate students is seeing them leave Fordham and make their mark on the world,” said Jeanne Flavin, Ph.D., director of graduate studies for the department.
