Mary Bly, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of English, gave a talk, “Love Among the Philistines: When T. S. Eliot and Catullus Embrace,” at the 12th Annual National Book Festival held at the National Mall and sponsored by the Library of Congress on Sept. 23.

John Carey, Ph.D., BUS,
professor of communications and media management, gave a presentation on “Changing Media Habits,” for the Online Publishers Association on May 23, a lecture on “Lessons For Digital Marketing From the Early Marketing of Television,” for the MPG Collaborative Alliance on June 7, a lecture on “Social Media Trends” for the Board of Directors of Everyday Health on June 14, and a presentation on “Measurement Challenges From New Audience Behaviors,” at a joint conference sponsored by Columbia Business School’s CITI and Fordham Business Schools’ Center for Communication on June 25.

Saul Cornell, Ph.D., A&S,
The Paul and Diane Guenther Chair in American History, spoke at the Jewish Center of Teaneck for their annual “Issues in Society” program about “The Great American Gun Debate” in September.

Gloria Durka, Ph.D., GRE,
professor and director of the Ph.D. program in Religious Education, presided over the meeting of the International Seminar on Religious Education and Values (ISREV), “Respecting History and Remembrance in Religious Education Research,” which was held in Turku, Finland, from July 29-August 3. At the final session of the meeting, she was re-elected president of ISREV.

Qin Gao, Ph.D., GSS,
associate professor of social work, received a grant from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange to study “Social Policy, Poverty, and Income Inequality in China: From 2002 to 2007.” He also gave a presentation titled “How Does Hidden Income Affect Income Distribution? Evidence from Guangzhou, China” at the 32nd General Conference of the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW) in August in Boston.

Franklin Harkins, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of theology, gave a paper titled “Littera et Lex: Scriptural Hermeneutics and the Old Law at the Twelfth-century Parisian Abbey of St. Victor” at Kölner Mediaevistentagung at the University of Cologne in September.

Paul Kantor, Ph.D., A&S,
professor emeritus of political science, co-authored Struggling Giants: City Region Governance in London, New York, Paris and Tokyo  (University of Minnesota Press, 2012).

Anne-Marie Kirmse, O.P., Ph.D., A&S,
research associate, Laurence J. McGinley Chair in Religion and Society, and associate professor of theology, presented a paper, “Avery Dulles and Vatican II,” at the Vatican II Conference at Walsh University in Canton, Ohio. She has also been appointed to the Board of Trustees of Molloy College.

Usha Kotelawala, Ph.D., GSE,
assistant professor of mathematics education, and Robert Graham, Ed.D., GSE, clinical associate professor of education, won a grant of $1,168,217 for their project, “Fordham University NSF Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program,” from the National Science Foundation.

Sophie Mitra, Ph.D., A&S,
a
ssociate professor of economics, participated in a panel discussion on “Gender Inequality: Empowering Women with Disabilities in Employment” at the United Nations in conjunction with the Fifth Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Sept. 13.

Philip M. Napoli, Ph.D., BUS,
professor of communication and media management and director of the Donald McGannon Communication Research Center, published an article, “Retransmission Consent and Broadcaster Commitment to Localism” in CommLaw Conspectus. In September, he delivered an invited presentation on social TV analytics to the American Association of Advertising Agencies and a presentation on “Program Value in the Evolving Television Audience Marketplace” to the Council on Research Excellence. Napoli also was an invited participant in an FCC research design meeting for a multi-market study of critical information needs.

Patrick J. Ryan, S.J., A&S,
The Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society, delivered a keynote lecture, “Environmental Factors in Religious Change: Perspectives from the Sahel and Savannah of West Africa,” at the Religion and Environment Conference at the University of Pretoria, South Africa on Aug. 15. He also delivered a lecture, “The Call to Worship: A Trialogical Meditation on Islam,” at St. Augustine’s University College in Johannesburg, South Africa on Aug. 8. Father Ryan celebrated the annual Red Mass for the Lawyers and Judges of Yonkers in Yonkers on Oct. 1.
