Babette Babich, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of philosophy, gave a lecture, “Heidegger’s Letter on Humanism,” to the annual meeting of the Heidegger Circle in New Haven and another lecture, “Nietzsche, Beethoven, and Incarnate Dissonance,” at a conference on Music and Politics at the University of California at San Diego.

William F. Baker, Ph.D., GSE,
the Claudio Acquaviva S.J. Chair and journalist-in-residence, was interviewed by Bob Sherman on 90.7 WFUV regarding Henry Island and traditional Cape Breton music from that area on June 2.

Claudio Burgaleta, S.J. GRE,
associate professor of theology, won first prize in the Spanish category for 2013 for his book, Manual de Eclesiologia para los Catolicos de Hoy (Liguori Publications, 2012), from the Association of Catholic Publishers.

Giselle Esquivel, Psy.D., GSE,
professor of school psychology, co-authored a book chapter, “Testing for Language Competence in Children and Adolescents.”

Bradford E. Hinze, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of theology, was elected vice-president for 2013-2014 at the Annual Meeting of the Catholic Theological Society of America on June 7. He will select the topic for the convention and the plenary speakers for the 2015 convention, and be president of the largest society of Catholic theologians in the world in 2015-16. 

John Houtz, Ph.D., GSE,
professor of educational psychology, co-presented a poster, “Problem-Solving Styles, Learning Behaviors and Attitudes, and Mathematics Performance” at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) held in San Francisco.

Anne-Marie Kirmse, O.P., Ph.D., A&S,
research associate, Laurence J. McGinley Chair in Religion and Society, and associate professor of theology and continuing studies, presented a paper, “Cardinal Dulles and the New Evangelization,” at the College Theology Society convention held at Creighton University in Omaha. She also participated in a panel, “Avery Cardinal Dulles an American Catholic Theologian,” at the convention.

Timothy Malefyt, Ph.D., BUS,
visiting associate professor of marketing, won second prize at the International Conference on Anthropological Applications in Management and Marketing in Shanghai for his paper, “Sensory Marketing and Brand Rituals.”

Frank McLaughlin, ADM,
associate vice president of student affairs for athletics alumni relations, was honored at the inaugural Irish Sports 50 awards presented by the Irish Voice newspaper on June 6.

Maureen H. O’Connell, Ph.D., A&S,
associate professor of theology, received the annual Book of the Year award for If These Walls Could Talk: Community Muralism and the Beauty of Justice (Liturgical Press, 2012) at the Annual Meeting of the College Theology Society at Creighton University on June 1.

Elliott S. Palais, Ed.D., ADM,
director of TRiO, has been inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame upon the recommendation of New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. The induction took place in Albany on May 21.

Christiana Peppard, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of theology and science, was awarded the 2013 Catherine Mowry LaCugna Award for her essay, “Fresh Water and Catholic Social Thought: A Vital Nexus,” published in 2012 in the Journal of Catholic Social Thought at the Annual Meeting of the Catholic Theological Society of America on June 7.

Joseph Ponterotto, Ph.D., GSE,
professor of counseling, co-authored and published a biographical profile of Bobby Fischer inAmerican National Biography On-Line.

Msgr. Joseph G. Quinn, J.C.L., ADM,
vice president of university mission and ministry, presented the keynote address at the 87th annual Holy Name Society family communion breakfast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel/St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church on June 9.

Mitchell Rabinowitz, Ph.D., GSE,
professor of education and chair of the Division of Psychological and Educational Services, co-presented a poster, “What’s in a Domain: Understanding How Students Approach Questioning in History and Science,” at the 25th Annual Convention of the Association for Psychological Science in Washington, D.C. in May. He also presented a poster, “Correspondence of Cognitive Events and Cognitive Processes in Guided Cognition Tasks” with William B. Whitten, Ph.D., GSE, Distinguished Research Scholar and director of Fordham University’s Center for Learning in Unsupervised Environments (CLUE), at the conference.

Travis L. Russ, Ph.D., BUS,
assistant professor of communication, published “The Relationship Between Theory X/Y Assumptions and Communication Apprehension” in the Leadership & Organization Development Journal.                                                                                  

Patrick J. Ryan, S.J., A&S,
The Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society, had his Spring 2013 McGinley Lecture, “Naming God: A Quandary for Jews, Christians and Muslims,” published in Origins.

Allen Schiff, Ph.D., BUS,
professor and area chair of accounting and taxation, faculty director of MS in accounting and MTA programs, and lead faculty representative for International Student Assimilation, was awardedManagement Accounting Quarterly’s “best articles of the year” for his paper, “Accounting for Contingencies: Disclosure of Future Business Risks.”

Maureen A. Tilley, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of theology and medieval studies, presented a paper, “Circumcellions, Donatists and Violence: What We Know and Don’t Know,” at the annual meeting of the North American Patristics Society in Chicago on May 25.

Akane Zusho, Ph.D., GSE,
associate professor of school psychology, was awarded the American Psychological Association Division 15 (Educational Psychology) Richard E. Snow Early Contributions Award. She presented a roundtable session, “Achievement Goals in Context” at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) held in San Francisco. She also presented a poster, “Making Differentiated Instruction Sustainable Through Online Self-Regulated Learning and Structured Choice” with Rhonda Bondie, Ph.D., GSE, clinical associate professor of childhood special education and Marshall George, Ed.D., GSE, professor of English and literacy education and chair of the Division of Curriculum and Teaching, at the conference.
