Leonard Cassuto, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of English, presented “Religion and the American Bestseller” at Drew University on Nov. 11.

Meghann Drury-Grogan, Ph.D., BUS,
assistant professor of communications and media management, co-published the book The Leadership Communication Lab: A Contemporary Business Communication Simulation (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2014) with Travis L. Russ, Ph.D.

Jeanne Flavin, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of sociology, and Lynn Paltrow of the National Advocates for Pregnant Women, published an op-ed “Pregnant Women, and No Civil Rights,” in The New York Times on Nov. 8, and the essay “This is Just How Disingenuous ‘Personhood’ Amendments Are,” on the Talking Points Memo blog, Oct. 31. Flavin and Venezia Michalsen’s (Montclair State) peer-reviewed article “Not All Women Are Mothers: Addressing the Invisibility of Women Under the Control of the Criminal Justice System Who Do Not Have Children,” was published in the The Prison Journal. Finally, on October 18, Flavin gave a public lecture lecture, “Punishing Pregnant Women Who Use Drugs: Defying the Law, Science, and Common Sense,” co-sponsored by the University of Maine and the Mabel Wadsworth Health Center.

Elisabeth Frost, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of English and women’s studies, published a piece from her manuscript Proxy in Guernica Magazine.

Shushanik Hakobyan, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of economics, was the luncheon speaker at the National Economists Club in Washington, D.C. on October 16, 2014, where she discussed the issues surrounding the utilization and implementation of US Generalized System of Preferences, its currently expired status, and the impact such expiration may have on exports from developing countries.

Glenn Hendler, Ph.D., A&S,
associate professor and chair of English, published the essays “Feeling Like a State: Writing the 1863 New York City Draft Riots” in Unsettled States: Nineteenth-Century American Literary Studies (NYU Press, 2014) and Keywords for American Cultural Studies, 2nd edition (NYU Press 2014, co-edited with Bruce Burgett, University of Washington). Hendler also developed the linked website keywords.nuypress.org.

Amir Idris, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of African and African American studies, presented a paper titled, “The Tragedy of South Sudan – The way forward,” to the NYC Bar Committee on African Affairs on Nov. 5.

Beth Knobel, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of communication and media studies, published an op-ed in the Hartford Courant entitled “250 Years Of Keeping ‘Em Honest.”

Travis L. Russ, Ph.D., BUS,
associate professor of communications and media management, co-published the book The Leadership Communication Lab: A Contemporary Business Communication Simulation (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2014) with Meghann Drury-Grogan, Ph.D.

Lance Strate, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of communication and media studies, wrote an article for the Educational Technology and Change journal entitled “Media Literacy as an Ethical Obligation.” In the same issue, Alexandria Prochnow, FCLC ’14, published “The Next Generation: An Analysis of Autism Through Media Representation” based on the Honors program thesis she completed under Strate’s direction as her mentor.

Terrence W. Tilley, Ph.D., A&S,
Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., Chair in Catholic Theology, presented a paper, “Academic Freedom, Divine Revelation, and the Catholic University,” to a symposium on Fidelity and Freedom celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Ex Corde Ecclesiae on Nov. 14 at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.
