Elaine Congress, D.S.W., GSS,
associate dean of GSS and professor of social work, published a chapter titled “Global Ethical Principles and Dilemmas” in the Handbook of International Social Work. She was named Social Work Educator of the Year on Oct. 14 by the New York State Social Work Education Association. Congress was selected as a member of the American Public Health Association’s governing council and is the incoming chair of the Council on Publications at the Council on Social Work Education.

professor of African and African-American studies and associate chair, served on two panels: “Voices from Sudan” and “South Sudan: Challenges to the World’s Newest Nation ” at the End Genocide Action Summit in Washington D.C., which was held from Oct. 22 to 23.

associate professor of counseling psychology, co-authored “Career-Related Success Learning Experiences of Academically Underachieving Urban Middle School Students” in The Counseling Psychologist. Her co-authors were Fordham doctoral students Claudia Perolini, Alexander Fietzer, Elizabeth Altschuler, Scott Woerner and Naoko Hashimoto.

Patrick J. Ryan, S.J., A&S,
the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society, delivered the paper “Ignatius Among the Muslims: Looking at Islam with Ignatian Eyes; Reading Ignatius with Muslim Eyes,” on Sept. 17 at the Jesuits Among Muslims meeting in Rome. He attended the annual meeting of United States Jesuits involved in interreligious dialogue in Omaha, Neb., from Oct. 21 to 23. He published “Women as Prophets—Jewish, Christian and Muslim” in Religious for Religious, and reviewed the book A Convergence of Civilizations by Youssef Courbage and Emmanuel Todd in the Oct. 7 issue ofCommonweal.

professor of communication and media studies, presented the paper “If Not A, Then E,” gave a Pecha Kucha presentation “The Medium Is…” and participated on panels concerning media literacy and Marshall McLuhan’s perspective on art, at the 79th annual meeting of the New York State Communication Association, which was held from Oct. 21 to 23.
