Vincent Alfonso, Ph.D., GSE,
associate dean for academic affairs and professor of education, was elected president of the Community Free Democrats for 2009. CFD is an official Democratic Club on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, founded in 1969.

Joshua Brown, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of psychology, has received $1.7 million from the National Institutes of Mental Health to test the effectiveness of teaching social-emotional skills to children entering adolescence. Brown is a co-principal investigator of the three-year study titled “Health Risk Behavior in Late Childhood.”

Yvette Christiansë, Ph.D., A&S,
associate professor of English and comparative literature, gave a reading from her forthcoming poetry collection, Imprendehora, at Barnard College on March 24. The event was sponsored by the Barnard’s Africana Studies Program.

W. Norris Clarke, S.J., A&S,
professor emeritus of philosophy, has posthumously published The Creative Retrieval of St. Thomas Aquinas (Fordham University Press, 2009), a series of essays in Thomistic philosophy.

George Demacopoulos, Ph.D., A&S,
associate professor of theology, gave the keynote speech at the inaugural symposium of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, “The Ecumenical Patriarchate: A Church in Captivity and the Religious Freedom Crisis in Turkey,” on March 7 in Broomall, Pa.

John A. Fortunato, Ph.D., BUS,
associate professor of communication and media management, is the lead author of an article, “The Supreme Court Perspective of Media Effects as Expressed in Campaign Finance Reform” published in the Texas Wesleyan Law Review.

Ray Fox, Ph.D., GSS,
professor of social work, has received the Pauline C. Zischka Social Worker of the Year Award from the Molloy College Alumni Relations Office and Department of Social Work in East Farmingdale, N.Y.

Jonathan Gray, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of communication and media studies, has edited a book with Jeffrey P. Jones, and Ethan Thompson, titled Satire TV: Politics and Comedy in the Post-Network Era (NYU Press, 2009), released April 1.

Anne-Marie Kirmse, O.P., Ph.D., A&S,
research associate, Laurence J. McGinley Chair in Religion and Society, has published “Avery Dulles: From Convert to Cardinal,” in Here Comes Everybody: Catholic Studies in American Higher Education, edited by William C. Graham (University Press of America, 2009).

Beth Knobel, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of communication and media studies, spoke on “15 Years Covering Russia and Its Neighbors” at the Russian-American Journalists’ Association on March 19 in New York.

Angela O’Donnell, ADM,
associate director/acting co-director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies, has published a volume of poetry, Waiting for Ecstasy (Franciscan Press, 2009).

Barbara Porco, Ph.D., BUS,
director of program development for the Schools of Business, gave a speech on March 17 at Ferguson Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pa., called “Ethical Leadership: The ‘Tipping Point’ in a Financial Crisis.”

Asif Siddiqi, Ph.D., A&S,
assistant professor of history, gave a lecture, “First Steps into Space: The Making of Sputnik,” at the William Miller Sperry Observatory at Union County College, Cranford, N.J., on March 20.

Lance Strate, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of communication and media studies and associate chair for graduate studies, delivered a lecture, “The Medium, The Message, and Me and You: Understanding our Technological and Symbolic Environments,” on March 19 at Eastern Michigan University.

Harold Takooshian, Ph.D., A&S,
professor of psychology, and Elaine P. Congress, Ed.D., associate dean of GSS, co-authored a data-based article on “Getting Involved in International Activities” in International Psychology Bulletin(Winter 2009), published by the American Psychological Association.
