Harrington will lead the college until a search is conducted to identify a permanent dean. Michael Latham, Ph.D., dean of FCRH, has accepted a position at Grinnell College in Iowa.
Harrington has served as dean of the faculty of arts and sciences since 2009, guiding 350 full-time faculty in 20 departments. He chairs the Council of Deans of Arts and Sciences and has worked collaboratively to launch initiatives for faculty hiring, faculty mentoring and development, and external department and program reviews.

Harrington received a bachelor’s degree in English from Columbia University, a master’s in Anglo-Irish studies from University College Dublin, and a doctorate in literature from Rutgers University. He has written extensively on Irish literature and culture.

Harrington began his academic career in 1985 as an assistant professor of English and director of composition at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, N.J. He served on the faculty at the Cooper Union from 1986 to 2002, and was a professor and dean at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., from 2002 to 2009.
