Fordham University mourns the death of Rev. Mary-Marguerite Kohn, Ph.D., adjunct professor of pastoral counseling in the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education (GRE).

Rev. Mary-Marguerite Kohn, Ph.D.

Kohn died on May 5 at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, following a tragic shooting incident on May 3 at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Endicott City, Maryland, where she was co-rector. Another employee of St. Peter’s, Brenda Brewington, died in the same incident. The alleged gunman, Douglas Franklin Jones, died also, from a self-inflicted gunshot.

“It is heartbreaking to lose these two women, whose lives were dedicated to helping others, in an instant of brutality,” said Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham. “I ask that you join with me in praying for Rev. Kohn and Ms. Brewington, for their families and colleagues, and for the faculty and students of GRE.”

Rev. Kohn had been a member of the GRE faculty since 2010, where she taught in the distance learning degree program for pastoral counseling.

She held a doctorate degree in pastoral counseling from Loyola University Maryland, a master’s in divinity from the Divinity School of Duke University, a master of social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Duke University.

She was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1994, and had worked extensively as both a licensed clinician and as a community liturgical and spiritual leader.

Among the online courses she taught were Human Growth and Development, and Professional Ethics and Pastoral Care.

“She will be missed greatly by her students, who were very energized from working with her,” said Patrick Holt, assistant dean of the GRE.

In addition to her position at Fordham, Rev. Kohn was an affiliate faculty member at the Loyola Graduate School of pastoral counseling.

Details regarding funeral and memorial services will be published here as they become available.
