Nearly 1,000 Law School alumni will gather on September 28 to mark the close of the School’s yearlong centennial celebration. Guests will be ferried to Ellis Island for the black-tie gala, which will include cocktails, dinner, entertainment, the presentation of two celebratory videos, and fireworks.

“The closing gala will be a truly magical evening,” said William Michael Treanor, J.D., dean and professor of law. “The Fordham Law family will gather to celebrate our first 100 years and to kick off a new century of unlimited promise.”

Symposium: New Dimensions of Citizenship
Anna Deavere Smith and Kwame Anthony Appiah will present keynote addresses at the Law School’s appiah_lawcentennial conference on citizenship September 29 and 30 in McNally Amphitheater.

The event, New Dimensions of Citizenship, assembles leading experts from a variety of disciplines to explore conceptions of citizenship, our identities as citizens, and our ideas about how best to prepare citizens to negotiate an increasingly diverse society.

The symposium is free and open to the public and runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Seating for the Anna Deavere Smith keynote address is extremely limited. Pre-registration is required at http://law.fordham.edu/cle.htm.

U.S. Representative Michael G. Oxley to Present Destefano Lecture
U.S. Representative Michael G. Oxley (R-Ohio) will present the Sixth Annual Albert A. DeStefano Lecture on Corporate, Securities and Financial Law on September 25.

Oxley, who is serving his 12th term in the House and is the chairman of the House Committee on Financial Services, is co-author of the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The act, signed into law in 2002, provides for new and enhanced standards governing corporate responsibility and financial disclosure.

Oxley’s lecture, “Securing the U.S. Economy: Protecting Investors and Our Capital Markets,” will address questions about the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, its future, and the improvement of the physical security of our markets.
The lecture is free open to the public and will be followed by a cocktail reception. The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Law School’s James B.M. McNally Amphitheater.

The DeStefano Lecture is sponsored by the Center for Corporate, Securities, and Financial Law. The center, established in 2001, serves as a focal point for the Law School’s business law programs. Capitalizing on the School’s strong academic reputation, its alumni network of prominent corporate and business leaders, and its location in the financial capital of the world, the center provides a forum in which attorneys and policy makers can address issues of importance to the business community.

The Law School’s yearlong celebration included a symposium honoring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, the Law School community’s completion of 100,000 hours of public service, the ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, and a record $20 million in fundraising, including the creation of six new academic chairs.
