This two-hour workshop will enable Graduate School of Arts and Sciences students to design thoughtful assignments in their courses that effectively target the learning objectives.

The workshop will be led by Anne Fernald, Ph.D., professor of English and special adviser to the provost for faculty development. Fernald will guide students through the many levels involved in designing effective assessment including developing thoughtful and reasonable course objectives; choosing assignments that actually assess those objectives; balancing the number of assignments with the weight of each, in a way that is sensitive to the diversity of student backgrounds in the class; and designing effective and fair extra credit assignments.

This workshop will satisfy part of Core Competency 5—Diversity in the Classroom for the Preparing Future Faculty certificate.
