VIDEO: Veterans and NYC Teens Climb High

Several of Fordham’s student veterans teamed up with New York City high school teens over the course of the school year to teach them about leadership and teamwork.

The teens and vets started working together last fall with the help of the Travis Manion Foundation and Outward Bound. As part of Travis Manion’s Character Does Matter leadership course, students participated in “Grit & Resilience,” a lesson that featured rock climbing.

Most of the veterans at the event were pursing master’s degrees. Glen Redpath, associate director for admission at the School of Professional and Continuing Studies, works with many of the veterans on completing their undergraduate work.

He said there has been a 40 percent increase in the number of veterans pursuing master’s degrees over the last year. He attributed the increase to the veteran’s coordinators at both the Lincoln Center and Rose Hill campuses, who make sure the student veterans get the maximum from the Yellow Ribbon program, swiftly seguing the vets into one Fordham’s six graduate or professional schools.

The Travis Manion program and other similar ones help maintain a cohesive community among the vets as they transition from undergraduate to graduate, he said.
