Rose Hill welcomed a “new” residence hall on Dec. 4.

The building formerly known as Alumni Court North has been renamed Loschert Hall, in honor of William J. Loschert (CBA ’61).

Loschert, a resident of London, recently made a gift of $3.5 million to Fordham. But it’s not the first time he has given to his alma mater. The retired chairman of Ace Global Markets, he previously gave $2 million for an endowed scholarship fund.

“We all have the means to give—and not just money, but time and effort,” Loschert said. “It is our duty to help others and future generations.”

Friends and family attended a dedication ceremony and celebration on Dec. 4 on the Rose Hill campus.

“Thank you,” Loschert said, modestly asking attendees who honored him with a standing ovation to take their seats.

“Fordham gave me a great education. It’s easy to write a check, but it’s more important to do things that will make people happy.”

Loschert financed his Fordham education by working part-time at an insurance company in Manhattan.

“He is not a child of privilege,” said Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham. “He is a man who has a love of learning and devotion to the cause of education. He is a man who believes in the mission of Fordham University.”

Loschert said the renaming of the building reflects on the values that his parents instilled in him.

“Whatever you do in life, try to give something back, because life’s too short,” he said.
