(New York)—William Treanor, J.D., dean and professor of law, Fordham Law School, will ring the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Friday, August 18, at 9:30 a.m., in celebration of the Law School’s 100th anniversary. The opening will be broadcast live on CNBC. Dean Treanor will be joined at the bell-ringing by Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham University, and distinguished law school faculty and alumni.

The NYSE opening highlights a centennial year of numerous milestones at the Law School, including:

– A record-breaking $20 million fund-raising campaign for the 2005-06 fiscal year.

– The establishment of six new faculty chairs in the areas of advocacy; business law; international human rights; real estate, land use and property law; legal ethics, morality and religion; and urban legal issues.

– The opening in July of the Feerick Center for Social Justice and Dispute Resolution, a program headed by John D. Feerick, J.D., Leonard F. Manning Professor of Law and former dean of the Law School, that will bring under one roof a spectrum of legal and social justice work, ranging from policy formation and dispute resolution to direct legal services to the poor.

– The creation of the Forum on Law, Culture, and Society, a humanities program that unites influential artists and leading public figures in conversation with the general public to explore ideas of law and justice, and how they are integrated into the broader culture.

– Law School alumni, faculty and students pledged to perform 100,000 hours of public service work—a commitment no other law school has ever made—in honor of the School’s centennial. The school passed the 100,000 hour mark for service in July.

Fordham University School of Law was founded in 1905, and is nationally recognized for combining dynamic scholarship and teaching with outstanding legal training through clinical education, moot court, and law review programs. Located in Lincoln Center, the Law School’s faculty are ranked among the nation’s top 20 in six programs that span the breadth of legal education, and its student body ranks 15th nationally in academic qualifications.
