The late Lawrence J. Sacharow, who directed Fordham University’s theatre program until his death in August, was listed by Playbill magazine among a who’s who of theater professionals “who left us, and left us inspired,” in 2006.
Sacharow was highly regarded as a director, winning an Obie Award for his production of Len Jenkin’s “Five of Us,” and is considered a pioneer in biographical theater. He is also remembered for his association with playwright Edward Albee. Sacharow’s listing in Playbill credits him with “ushering the mid-1990s revival of Edward Albee with his 1994 New York staging of Three Tall Women.”
Sacharow, who was on the Fordham faculty for 17 years, won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Direction and was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle award for his direction of “Three Tall Women.” Among some of the other theater professionals included in the list were playwright Wendy Wasserstein, comedian Red Buttons, actress Shelly Winters and lyricist Betty Comden.
