TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — Five artists known for their depictions of women will be featured in an exhibition titled “Women Subjects by Women Artists: Rosemarie Beck, Isabel Bishop, Barbara Grossman, Alice Neel and Kyle Staver,” on display March 29 through April 26, in Butler Gallery, Butler Hall, Marymount College of Fordham University. A reception will take place Wednesday, April 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

These paintings, drawings and prints reflect the artists’ insights into the narrative, psychological and pictorial possibilities presented by their female subjects,” said David Holt, professor of art and gallery coordinator at Marymount College of Fordham University.

While Bishop’s nudes and genre studies reveal her sensitivity to physical gesture and historical milieu, Neel’s nudes are startlingly direct portraits of both body and psyche.

The show also features Beck’s loosely brushed, classically inspired paintings of Greek tragic heroines; Grossman’s lyrical compositions, which unify figures and patterns; and works by Staver, who defines her subjects with an economy of brushstrokes and shapes to produce paintings that are luminous and animated.
