Celia Fisher, Ph.D., director of Fordham’s Center for Ethics Education and professor of psychology, has been appointed to the Health and Human Service Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP). The new committee is charged with providing expert advice and recommendations to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson on issues pertaining to the protection of research subjects.

The committee will offer advice concerning research involving children, embryos, prisoners, individuals in international studies and other special populations. Fisher specializes in research protection for vulnerable populations, including children, adults with cognitive disabilities and ethnic/racial minorities. She also served as chair of the American Psychological Association’s Ethics Code Revision Task Force and is a member of the National Institute of Mental Health Data Safety and Monitoring Board.

She has co-edited five books and written more than 70 chapters and articles about professional ethics, emphasizing informed consent procedures and confidentiality and disclosure issues. Fisher’s appointment to the SACHRP committee is her second appointment in recent months. In November, she was appointed to the National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine Committee on Clinical Research With Children. The mission of this independent agency is to advance and disseminate information concerning health and science policy.
