Fordham Ranks High on Fulbright Scholars’ List

NEW YORK—Fordham University is ranked ninth among schools in the Mid-Atlantic whose students received Fulbright scholarships in 2004, with seven Fordham students awarded Fulbrights as of Sept. 9. That doesn’t include an eighth Fulbright awarded to a Fordham professor to study in France.

Fordham’s surge in the number of Fulbrights is not unexpected. Six years ago, the Office of Prestigious Fellowships was created to increase the number of scholarships awarded to students. And increasing the number of prestigious fellows is a cornerstone of Fordham’s effort to become the premiere Catholic university in the country, a challenge issued to the university community by Joseph M. McShane, S.J.,  president of Fordham University.

“This year we had 83 applicants for fellowships,” said John Kezel, Ph.D., University director for the Office of Prestigious Fellowships, “and 45 of those received awards. This included eight Fulbrights, up from four only one year ago, as well as the University’s first Eisenhower and Bosch Fellowships. These results place us in the top three [with Georgetown and Boston College]of Jesuit universities in terms of student fellowship recipients.”

The 2004 Fulbright list is produced by the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and is posted in the organization’s September 2004 online newsletter, the Fulbrighter. For a complete list, see http://www.imakenews.com/fulbright/index000061658.cfm.
