NEW YORK — Thomas De Luca, Ph.D., political science professor at Fordham University, has been awarded the Thomas Jefferson Distinguished Chair in American Social Studies. The chair is based at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where De Luca will lecture, mentor and teach during the 2006 spring semester. Distinguished Chairs are among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program.

While in the Netherlands, De Luca will work on a project that examines how American politics produces political, economic and foreign policy decisions, and how those policies are received in the Netherlands.

“With the war in Iraq and on terrorism ongoing, few things could be more important than sharing expertise about American politics with Europeans and bringing back their views and analysis to my students, colleagues and fellow citizens,” said De Luca. “This fellowship will challenge me to reflect on my own attitudes and assumptions about political life in the United States.”

This is the fifth Fulbright award for De Luca. Two other Fordham professors have recently received Fulbright awards: Paul Kantor, Ph.D., professor of political science, who will serve as the John Marshall Chair in Political Science at the University of Szeged in Hungary during fall 2005; and Babette Babich, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, who just finished a Fulbright Senior Scholarship appointment in Germany.
