WHO SHE IS
Counselor, Science and Technology Entry Program/Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP/ CSTEP) at Rose Hil

WHAT SHE DOES
Alyson provides assistance and guidance to pre-college STEP and undergraduate CSTEP students as they learn about and pursue careers in the scientific, technical, health-related and licensed professions, through emphasis on academic preparation, achievement and career awareness.

‘STEPPING’ UP
“CSTEP is a program designed to encourage underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students to pursue careers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and the licensed professions. It’s funded through the State of New York and Fordham.”

TIPS FOR SUCCESS
“We do quite a few workshops throughout the semester. Topics include fostering positive study skills, learning styles, time management and tips for getting into graduate school. We also offer review sessions for the science and math classes that students take as part of the pre-med curriculum, and sometimes arrange for tutors.”

SATURDAYS
“On Saturday mornings, I supervise the STEP Saturday Program, where STEP Scholars from around New York City and Westchester engage in advanced math and science coursework and assist students in career exploration and general counseling.”

FIELDS OF STUDY
“Our students are interested in fields such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, accounting, pre-med and pre-law. Typically, they are interested in a variety of careers, including medicine, law, teaching and social work.”

GIVING BACK
“In New York State, there is a shortage of individuals of African American, Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander decent pursuing careers in the STEM fields. For those who succeed in these fields, it is imperative that they see the need and feel the responsibility to give back to their communities.”

WHY FORDHAM?
“I graduated from Fordham College Rose Hill in 2005. Fordham is a second home to me; I’ve been on this campus since I was a little girl. Working at Fordham and for this program is my way of giving back for all that the University has given to me. I like to say that my heart pumps maroon.”

HOBBIES

“I am trying to finish all of the books on my bookshelf, which range from history to politics to self-help. I also love to travel. My favorite place is Japan; I lived there for two years as an assistant language teacher for the Japan Exchange Teaching Program in Miyazaki, Japan.”
