Students will have the opportunity to pursue liberal arts courses during two summer sessions in London, thanks to a new location that enables Fordham to expand its study abroad program.
The Liberal Arts Summer Program will debut in June at Heythrop College, the Jesuit specialist Philosophy and Theology College of the University of London. It will be administered through Fordham’s London Centre, an affiliation announced last April between Fordham and Heythrop.
Students who enroll in the program can choose from several courses in the humanities and social sciences. The first session runs from June 14 to July 16, while the second session runs from July 18 to Aug. 15.
“The courses, to be offered by some of our most distinguished faculty, cover a wide range of disciplines and take unique advantage of London,” said Ronald S. Méndez-Clark, Ph.D., director of International and Study Abroad Programs at Fordham.
“These should be of interest to students from several majors who want to have an international experience and are eager to balance rigorous coursework with opportunities to explore the dynamic city of London.”
The Liberal Arts Summer Program will make use of Fordham’s new quarters in the Isabel Block, as well as other Heythrop facilities, in addition to all that London has to offer.
“Heythrop is located in historic South Kensington so that classes and living quarters are minutes away from some of London’s most renowned museums, theaters, concert halls, shops and parks,” Méndez-Clark said.
The affiliation between Fordham and Heythrop created a home in Kensington Square for Fordham’s existing academic programs, including its London Dramatic Academy, the spring semester program in the College of Business Administration and two CBA summer programs.

The London Centre welcomes Fordham students from all disciplines and schools, as well as students from institutions in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), and students of other institutions who wish to attend. Fordham hopes the Centre eventually will become the London location of choice for all members of the AJCU when planning their international conferences or short-term study tours and summer programs.
“Since Heythrop College is a Jesuit institution, Fordham’s affiliation with it and its campus in South Kensington will enable us to establish a high-quality, full-fledged Fordham-sponsored study-abroad program with offerings during the entire academic year,” Méndez-Clark said.
“With the addition of these new liberal arts courses in the summer, Fordham is launching into its new role as the provider of quality Jesuit education in London for our own students as well as for those from other Jesuit and non-Jesuit institutions in the United States and Europe,” he said.
A constituent college of the University of London (UL), Heythrop was established in 1614 in Belgium by the Society of Jesus, and was relocated to England during the French Revolution. It moved to central London in 1970, when it joined the University of London.
