From 1975–1983, photographer Chuck Fishman photographed what was then a dwindling
remnant of a once vibrant Jewish community, a thousand years of history on the brink of extinction. Returning to Poland after a 30-year hiatus, he has begun documenting a stunning reversal of history—a Jewish cultural
renaissance, an extraordinary return to identity taking place there today.

ROOTS ~ RESILIENCE ~ RENEWAL draws upon Chuck Fishman’s first monograph, Polish Jews: The Final Chapter, published in 1977, and represents a project spanning 40 years—from the near-demise to the transformative rebirth of Polish Jewry. This is a story of spiritual and cultural revival that the passing of four decades has radically changed, a story that is rich and ready to be told.
